An antique amethyst cross brooch in yellow gold, designed as a cross formed of five round-shape, oval-shape and cushion-shape amethysts, rubover-set in closed back yellow gold settings, fitted to reverse with a pin and C-shape hook fitting.
Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz. The name comes from the Koine Greek (amethustos) where (a) means “not” and µe (methusko) means “intoxicate”. It was a reference to the belief that the Amethyst stone protects the wearer from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.
The total gem weight is approximately 9 carats, but it could vary if weighed unmounted. Measurements 3.0 x 2.8cm. Weight 7.03g.
